Prologue:
There are small moments in life when the world around seems to pause. An individual will look upon these moments in the future and a small smile or sigh will fall from their lips as they take in the emotional feeling of reminiscence. One of these small moments were beginning to take place on an ordinary day. An average girl had just clocked out of her ordinary job and was facing the day as she did to all others.
Emily Anderson's dark, non-stick shoes absorbed the concrete heat that the sun bathed down on New York City. Her blonde hair was still pulled high into a ponytail and it whipped from side to side as she strutted her way down the city's pavement. Emily had been headed to her car when the small moment struck.
She had noticed the man in the black suit a couple blocks away before she hit the crosswalk. The man remained in her mind because she couldn't help but think of how hot he must be feeling inside the
penguin suit on this hot summer day. Her small lips had puckered into a smirk as she thanked the heavens that her job as a waitress allowed her to wear light, moveable clothes. But even in her khakis and white button up, sweat had begun to pour out of each pore that was open to the sunlight. The man inside the business suit stood waiting on the other side of the crosswalk and they both pressed the small button for the traffic passing sign to acknowledge their presence. The man began to loosen his tie and Emily could swear she could see the glistening sweat shine from his forehead even though they had been far from each other.
A few minutes had passed.
The man began to fidget as he waited while Emily remained completely in her place. She didn't have a problem with waiting as most people did. But her chocolate brown eyes took in every movement the man made. He was not only fidgeting, but he also seemed antsy. The blonde haired female summed it up to his age. His salt and pepper hair and small belly bulge gave off that the man was probably in his mid-fifties. Emily herself had just hit twenty-five herself. Even though the two of them were a small distance apart, they're physical appearances stretched out longer when compared. The man grabbed his left arm and winced, but Emily thought nothing of it at the time.
The heat was starting to become unbearable.
Emily reached out to press the button again when she saw the man give out. His knees buckled and his body shifted downwards to land onto the concrete, his upper body facing the sun. Emily's fight or flight adrenaline kicked in. She looked to see if anyone else had noticed, but even on such a busy street in mid-afternoon there was no other sign of other civilians. To Emily's luck, the last car had passed her and the small white male took the traffic sign's place. Her non-stick shoes beat against the hot asphalt ground as she ran towards the man. Her purse thrown against the ground, she shook the man. He was unresponsive. Her panic level raised as she felt his neck for a pulse. His skin was rough to the touch and also exceedingly hot, but there was no sign of the thumping of blood.
Emily was suddenly glad to have spent a teenage summer as a life guard. She quickly moved the mans body to the correct position before beginning CPR. Sweat had dripped from her forehead as she bent atop of the man, breathing into his mouth and pumping his chest. The sun showed no mercy as Emily continued CPR for minutes. The people who inhabited the buildings around the two of them had noticed what had happened and a small crowd formed around the two of them. Emily looked up and zoned in on a person who held a cellphone in their hand. She demanded for them to call 911 as she still pumped away. When Emily was about to give up on saving the man's life, she felt his upper body jerk and he began breathing again.
If there was one thing that stood out in this small, memorable moment to Emily was the terrified look that filled the man's piercing blue eyes. He gripped his chest and began to look around, his breath coming out in pants. The compassionate side of Emily surfaced and she embraced the man in a hug, whispering to him that everything was alright. Then the man wrapped his arms around Emily, and it seemed for their life and surroundings to have paused. It was a moment that the both of them would remember for the rest of their lives.
